Recently, B and I redeemed a Groupon we purchased for a floating session.
I had seen this concept last year in the midst of all the craziness, before my father passed. In February, I saw a news station feature the local float space, Urban Float. I searched Groupon, and score, found it!
I bought a package for couples. I thought this could be our Valentine's Day treat to ourselves. We did not end up going for about 2 months. We thought we would float in the same pod, but we were put in separate rooms. It worked out for the best.
We watched an intro video, signed a waiver and each picked our own sound that would be played in our session. There was an option to have it played throughout the session or 5 minutes at the beginning and again at the end. We both chose throughout. He chose ocean waves and I chose spa music.
We were given instructions then shown to our respective rooms. The salt water will stain most fabrics, so it's recommended you wear your birthday suit. We were to shower thoroughly before, including our hair, but not use conditioner to help keep the water cleaner. They provided toiletries. They also provided petroleum jelly to apply to any minor cuts and scratches and ear plugs. They are not waterproof, but they are available if you want them. I recommend them.
I hurried through my shower. I was so excited! I could feel myself grinning as I lowered myself in. I'm not an excellent swimmer, but can float on my back and have always found it relaxing. The water is kept at body temperature to create a feeling of zen...make yourself one with the water.
There is an option of whether or not to submit yourself to total darkness or ambient lighting in the pod. B chose total darkness and I choose the pretty, pretty lights.
For the majority of the time, I tried to lay and be still. It was such a comforting feeling. Floating was effortless due to the epsom salt. I couldn't sit up if I wanted to.
I LOVED IT!!! It did get a little stuffy for me. I opened the pod a couple of times to let fresh air in. They did tell us in the orientation that we could use the towel provided to prop the pod open a couple of inches and it would not disturb the floating atmosphere. I was too comfortable to get out and do that, so opening the pod as needed worked for me. B kept it closed the whole time.
My experience was that it seemed longer than an hour. Towards the end, I opened my eyes and moved back and forth, looking at the light reflection. I dozed a couple of times, but woke up immediately. B felt the time went by fast. I think he slept. We had different experiences, so ultimately it was best that we didn't float together.
When the music ended, your time was up. You get out and shower again. This time conditioner is allowed for your hair. After you are dressed, there is a room provided with hair dryers, straighteners, hair products and non personal toiletry items at your disposal. It's a community area.
The staff that helped us was friendly and answered our questions. We loved it and would definitely do it again!
